A Biarri EMI case study for Newcrest
Automated 100% of crew allocations
Increased crew allocation communication
Improved crewing consistency
Reduced crew planner bias
Improved crew allocation transparency
Automatic log journal creation
The solution has enabled visibility and accountability for decisions made in the live run environment and created consistency in the way crews are deployed. It has also given capability to easily extract meaningful data to quickly analyse allocations made, and track all changes.”
Business Need
Aurizon Hunter Valley has been servicing coal producers in the region since 2005 and currently provides rail haulage for almost 30% of the Australian coal market. With more than 6000 services being run each year the Aurizon Hunter Valley team required a better way to manage their crew across their shifts.
Aurizon’s Live Run team used static paper-based worksheets to manage an evolving and dynamic process of allocating crew to train services. There was a heavy reliance on historical knowledge of the Live Run team (e.g. an individual crew’s track knowledge) causing poor visibility and accountability for decisions made in the live run environment.
We are very pleased with the work Biarri has done and their capabilities across building operational solutions for crew management. The web-based application that Biarri delivered replaced our old paper-based processes to deliver a workable solution covering 100% of our required crew allocation.
Our Approach
- We worked closely with future users of the tool to ensure all of their specific needs and unique constraints were considered. It was important for the Aurizon management team that the tool would limit impact on day to day operations while ensuring a significant increase in efficiency and audibility.
- The tool was developed in multiple stages, allowing requirements to be reconsidered after each stage so that development was always producing what was most relevant at the time.
- The BOSS Platform allowed us to rapidly develop Aurizon’s new tool and provides access via a web interface, allowing users to log in from anywhere with an internet connection.
